Day 30 brought another 3 baseball selections from the MLB and a treble covering all the selections. We’re having a bad time of the baseball at the moment and this bunch was no better. It was another 0 out of 3 making it no winners out of the last 15 baseball selections. The Rockies came closest, winning by 1 run but not overcoming their -1.5 run handicap but the Pirates lost 9-1.

We were given golf picks for the European Open and the Canadian Open last Wednesday and the results were finalised late on Sunday.

In the European tournament, Trevor Fisher Jnr showed good value for a 125/1 pick but couldn’t keep the pace up and finished in joint 19th. Three other picks didn’t do as well, the defending champion Alexander Levy was the one to watch. On the 18th hole of the final round, Levy led by a single shot but after a 10-foot birdie putt from Jordan Smith, it appeared the pressure got to Levy and he could only manage a par, taking the tournament to a play-off. Levy played well in the first play-off but it was a tie again and a poor tee shot on the second hole gave the title to Jordan Smith. Second place meant a decent return from the each way bet and it was just enough to cover the rest of the bets for that tournament and see us break even.

The Canadian Open was just perhaps more nail-biting. Schniederjans had a great first day and started well on Friday and was leading with -9 at that point but he couldn’t keep it up and went out of contention on the last round. Stallings and Percy never looked to write any headlines but the remaining two picks, Hoffman and Garrigus did very well. Garrigus had a great 3rd round with a score of -10, catapulting him up to T3 and -15 over night. Hoffman was leading going into the third round with -17. Garrigus couldn’t keep up the pace in the last round and only managed -3 to finish in joint 5th, good enough for us as he placed at 125/1. Hoffman was a shot behind on the 18th but a birdie took it to the play-offs once again. Both Vegas and Hoffman hit a bunker in the play-off but Vegas hit a lovely shot and finished on a birdie which Hoffman couldn’t compete with. That left us with two places in the Canadian Open and a good profit from the week’s golf tips. It was incredibly close to being so much more in both tournaments, half an inch was all that prevented a 25/1 winner in one and if only Garrigus could have continued his form in the Canadian Open we would have bagged a lovely 125/1 winner.
