Golf Bet Profits – Week 4
8 February
The number-one selection in the Qatar Masters this week was Steve Stricker, who is renowned for his putting on a course which ideally suits that skill. He started badly with a four over par round of 76, pulled back in Round Two with one under in 11th place, but returned a 73 and 69 in the last two rounds to finish joint 45th. David Horsey was shaping up quite nicely for a place, but did not maintain his progress and his eight over par in the last round relegated him to 76th. Danny Willett returned scores of 78 and 70 in the first two rounds but missed the cut.
Phil Mickelson loves the Scottsdale-Stadium course in Arizona and seemed overpriced at 8/1 to win the Phoenix Open. The first two rounds went quite well, his 67 and 65 being ten under par, with Rickie Fowler returning a second-round score of nine under par to join him in fifth place. Mickelson hit two par scores in the next two rounds to finish on 274 (joint 29th) with Fowler doing slightly better on 271, finishing joint 13th.
At one stage it looked like the Phoenix was going to reel in some needy profit, but the last two rounds put paid to that and we ended up with nothing.
