Golf Bet Profits – Week 5
14 February
Rory McIlroy started the week at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic at The Emirates Golf Club in sizzling form, opening with a 65 and added a 68 on Friday to put him in the lead on 11 under par. Saturday was a tricky day on the course with strong winds blowing and he had to settle for a 75, which put him in a three-way tie for the lead on eight under par. The final day was also windy and McIlroy closed out with a two over par 74. He was level par for the day after 13 holes but a run of bogeys at 14, 15 and 16, put paid to his chances of a second victory in Dubai. He finished in a tie for tenth on six under par.
Sweden’s Peter Hanson also suffered on the third day with a one over par 73 after recording two 69 scores in each of the first two rounds to put him in joint fourth place. He made a last round score of 70 to put him in ninth place on seven under par and, alas, out of the top five places. He did manage to pick up €40,503 in prize money.
Dustin Johnson was humbled in his first round on Friday when, on one horrible golf hole, he somehow managed to accumulate seven strokes within 30 yards of the green en route to taking a quadruple-bogey eight on a fairly easy par four. As a result, the two-time defending champion of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am was in serious danger of missing the 54-hole cut after Saturday’s third round. He recovered, slightly, from lying joint 75th, to shoot a 70 and 74 to eventually finish tied in 55th position.
What promised to be a very successful weekend from our bank’s point of view, turned out to be another ten-point loss.
