Golf Bet Profits – Week 7
28 February
This week’s tournament was the Accenture Match Play Championship and World Golf Championships at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain in Marana, Arizona (pause to catch breath). Yes, quite a mouthful, but at least the service came out on top by backing the winner.
The 64 competing players were split into four groups, each match playing 18 holes. We had four selections, one in each group, all backed to win with Graeme McDowell being the top selection with a two-point bet, the rest on one point to win. The plan was to get these into the semis so they could be layed and make more money than an each-way bet.
With only a few hours notice, it was decided to back two further singles in Round Three (Luke Donald going on to win) and with Watson playing out of his skin he looked the best bet to get into the semi-final.
As it happened Watson was all we got one into the semis from the original bets, but bad weather forced the quarter-finals and semi-finals to be played on the same day with a straight turnaround. Also, with the time difference of eight hours, it was unrealistic to keep tabs on Watson in these circumstances and he was left to get into the Final. He had been five down with eight holes to play in the quarter-final but still won, then lost by one in the semi-final to Martin Kaymer.
Round One looked good for the selections with all four going through, but with Schwartzel losing by one and Rose losing after two extra holes in Round Two, the two extra bets were introduced. McDowell and Mahan went in Round Three putting us down to two selections once more for the quarter-final. Donald beat Ryan Moore 5 & 4 and Watson beat J.B.Holmes after an extra hole.
The Final between Donald and Kaymer was evenly matched, but by hole five Donald had crept into a three-shot lead. By the half-way stage Kaymer had pulled it back to even things up with the sleet coming down. Donald regained the lead by the 11th and was three up with three holes to play before hitting a championship-winning tee shot that landed 13 feet from the pin. Kaymer could not make the 29 foot birdie putt and is conceded the tap-in par before Donald sealed the win with a two-putt.
A very welcome 33-point payback which gave us a 25-point profit overall. Had the weather not taken such a hold we could have taken advantage of Watson’s progress to the semis by laying then hedging the back bet to make 14.56 extra points, but it was not to be.
