Two qualifying races today, but no winner. In order for the balances to show a profit, a winner will be needed.
I spent about 10 minutes on each race. The same horse was selected for all three variants. For each race I inspected the odds half an hour before race time, but there was nothing anywhere near a match of odds with the Bookie and with Betfair. On the first race, near the off, I took a Back price of 7.0 and the nearest I could get with the Lay price was 7.2, so I had to take the slightly non-optimum prices. I suspect this is going to happen quite often.
I think that is why they probably developed variant 3 which allows for such a variation. The second race similarly, half an hour before the off, no runner met the Back/Lay criteria. In the last three minutes a horse became an obvious choice, the price was coming in on Betfair and after the decision to Back at the Bookie at a price of 5.5, the Lay price of 5.4 was available and if not paper trading, I would have laid at this price.
Interestingly the price came in much further, down to 4.5, but the Lay would have been made at 5.4. Of course, the price on Betfair could easily have gone out. There is going to be considerable, skill/luck involved in getting the Lay price.
Anyway, both horses lost, so as it turned out there was very little change in the Total Balance, on all three variants. At Betfair odds of 7.2 or 5.4, one can expect on average only one winner in every 5 or 7 races. So one has to be prepared to do the research without profit most of the time.
